Chopped Liver – Lucky You

So what kind of liver would you like sir? A healthy one? Or a lucky one?

Or the unluckiest one in the world?

The headline news today is about the closure of Birmingham Airport due to a light aircraft crashing on the runway.

And before I continue, one man is seriously injured and I don’t mean to be flippant on his part, but I am drawn to the reason for the light aircraft attempting to land at the airport.

It was carrying a liver in readiness to transplant into a grateful recipient.

So, having only seen the headlines scrolling across a TV screen, I put 2 and 2 together and came up with… well 4 and a tiny bit – and that tiny bit was – suppose that liver was intended for me!

That was MY liver on the news – lying bleeding on the tarmac.

But then I heard later that a) it was intended for a recipient in .. wait for it… eh, in Birmingham. Yes, probably a clue in the location of the scene of the accident. Oh, and amazingly, they are… as i write this… using the very same liver in the transplant operation after all!

Imagine that. So I was thinking – is this the luckiest liver in the world? Or the unluckiest?

Let’s just look at the recent history of said liver. I’ll add a couple of presumptions. I presume, at some point, earlier today a poor unfortunate soul had suddenly no need for his/her liver anymore – car crash? Maybe. Accident? Possibly.

Then, our friend the liver is whipped out from its owner, and granted a business class seat on a light aircraft to start a new life in a new owner. But, of course it didn’t quite make it. Plane crash? Definitely.

The end? Absolutely not. I really do hope the transplant was successful and that 19th November 2010 was 3rd time lucky for one adventurous liver.

Now there… are 3…. steps to… carry a donor card – ooh, wap wap!
Just follow steps 1, 2 and 3.
